General Directions: Begin with properly cleaned and
fired 06 bisque. Thin down White and apply over entire piece into all detail.
When dry, apply another smooth coat of undiluted White. Allow to dry. Apply
Hyacinth Blue in small areas wiping back highlights until entire piece is
covered. Dampen a soft cloth with Solvent to wipe back further highlights for
an overall even look to antiquing. Spray with Porcelain Mist to set TL.
Technique
1.
Use Cocoa Twinkle on railroad ties. Spray. Very lightly highlight the
edges with Mink. Evenly drybrush rail and toolbox on coal car with Sculptured
Bronze then tip into Glorious Gold to highlight. Further highlight rails by
lightly drybrushing with Shimmering Silver.
2.
Lightly drybrush cobblestones with Mink then tip into Light Tan to
highlight. Tap some Slate Gray into the area. Further highlight with White.
Randomly paint a few stones with washes of Brick Red and Light Umber. Float
Flat Black up around rail where oil and grease would fall off train.
3.
Apply Silver Jubilee Twinkle to entire train except windows. Lightly
wipe highlights around each car. Spray. Apply a second coat to all areas that
are dark. Very lightly wipe highlights in wheel areas. Spray. Use a 3rd
and 4th coat in areas that are to remain black. Refer to photo for
color placements. For coal and pressure release, very lightly highlight with
Shimmering Silver.
4.
Drybrush body of engine, coal car, passenger car and caboose with Brick
Red. Tip brush into Country Apple to brighten up color. Paint inset of smaller
wheels and cow pusher bars with Brick Red. Drybrush the wheel spokes on the
engine’s larger wheels with Brick Red.
5.
Paint the outer edges of the small wheels with Flat Black and the inset
of the same wheels with Brick Red. Paint inner rim of large wheels with
Shimmering Silver. Lightly highlight springs and various wheel parts, including
brakes, with Shimmering Silver.
6.
Add accent lines of Flat Black to engine body. Add lines of “brass” with
Glorious Gold. Refer to photo for placement. For rivets, place colors as
directed: On areas that are painted Flat Black, paint rivets with Shimmering
Silver. On areas painted with Glorious Gold or Brick Red paint rivets with Flat
Black.
7.
For windows and headlight, drybrush with Medium Blue then highlight with
White. Highlight steps with Slate Gray then tip into White further highlight.
8.
Cover base with paper and spray with Gloss Spray all around train. All
aboard!
