Begin all pieces with properly cleaned and fired 04-03 bisque. Washes of color are determined by the amount of water added to the color. A heavy wash is made by adding enough water to a color to make it brushable and workable without leaving lines.

F-101  Edgar the Wizard

  1. Make a 2:1 mixture of SC-20 Birthday Suit and SC-2 Melon-Choly for the flesh. Apply 1 even coat of this mixture. When dry, apply a heavy wash of SC-21 Sunburn over all the flesh areas except the ears. Lightly brush over these areas with a wet brush to bring out the highlights of the flesh. When dry, apply 2 more even coats of the flesh mixture to all flesh areas.
  2. Add a medium wash of SC-21 Sunburn to the inside of the ears. Brush mix a small amount of the flesh mixture with SC-21 Sunburn to paint the fingernails. Use this same mixture for the lips.
  3. Clean out the eye area with a cleaning tool. Basecoat the eyes with SC-16 Cotton Tail, the irises are SC-21 Sunburn and the pupils are SC-15 Tuxedo. Apply 3 coats of SC-24 Dandelion to the shoe buckles, 3 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail to the crystal ball and 3 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo to the shoe soles.
  4. Antique the hair SC-35 Gray Hare, the cloak SC-34 Down To Earth and the book pages SC-5 Tiger Tail. Allow to dry completely.
  5. Apply 3 coats of CC-104 Plum Blossom to the hair, 3 coats of CC-103 to the book pages and 3 coats of CC-107 Green Tea to the cloak.
  6. Use 3 coats of PC-501 Terra Cotta for the book cover and shoes. Detail book as desired with SC-15 Tuxedo. Apply 1 coat of S-2101 Natural Clear to the flesh areas, crystal ball, shoe buckles and soles.
  7. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06. With brushes reserved for OV-1 Bright Gold, paint the shoe buckles. For the crystal ball, use a brush reserved for OV-3 Mother of Pearl.
  8. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 018. Remove from kiln with paper towel. Apply thinned black acrylic to the crackle areas of the piece and wipe back to reveal crackle pattern.

F-104  Gnarly Tree Stump Base

  1. Antique the rocks and skull SC-35 Gray Hare. When wiping back excess color, lightly tap back some residue color onto the rocks.
  2. Antique the rest of the stump with SC-34 Down To Earth. Apply 2 coats of SC-36 Irish Luck to the grass. Dry brush the mossy area around the skull as well. Allow all areas to dry thoroughly.
  3. Apply 3 coats of CC-104 Plum Blossom to the skull and rocks. Allow to dry.
  4. Carefully apply 3 coats of CC-106 Fuji Brown to the rest of the stump. When dry, this color looks a lot like the plum blossom.
  5. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06. If desired, apply OV-1 Bright Gold to a tooth on the skull. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 018. Remove from kiln with paper towels. Apply thinned black acrylic to the entire piece and wipe back to reveal crackle pattern.

F-103  Peter Dragon

  1. Antique the ground area with SC-34 Down To Earth, rocks SC-35 Gray Hare, chest of dragon SC-5 Tiger Tail and the rest of the dragon SC-63 Popeye’s Favorite. When wiping back excess color, lightly tap back some residue color before rinsing sponge.
  2. Apply 3 coats of SC-67 Cherry Bomb to the left half of the shield and SC-35 Gray Hare to the right side of the shield. Use 2 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo for the handle of the sword and detail with SC-67 Cherry Bomb. Apply 2 coats of SC-35 Gray Hare for the body of sword. Detail shield with SC-15 Tuxedo as desired.
  3. For the eyes, use 2 coats of SC-24 Dandelion to basecoat. Apply SC-15 Tuxedo for the pupils and lightly highlight with SC-16 Cotton Tail. Apply 2 coats of SC-15 Tuxedo to the nails. Apply a medium wash of SC-21 Sunburn inside ears.
  4. Apply 1 coat of S-2101 to the shield and sword. Use 3 coats of CC-104 Plum Blossom for the rocks, CC-106 Fuji Brown for the ground, CC-103 Raw Silk for the chest of the dragon and CC-107 Green Tea for the rest of the body and wings.
  5. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06. With a brush reserved for OV-2 White Gold, paint the sword. For the wings, use a brush reserved for OV-3 Mother of Pearl. Detail and trim shield as desired with a brush reserved for OV-1 Bright Gold.
  6. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 018. Remove from kiln with paper towel. Apply thinned black acrylic to entire piece then wipe back to reveal crackle pattern.

 

F-102  The Sorceress

  1. Make a 2:1 mixture of SC-20 Birthday Suit and SC-2 Melon-Choly for the flesh. Apply 3 even coats of this mixture to all flesh areas, including ears. When dry, shade bust and neck with SC-21 Sunburn.
  2. Add a medium wash of SC-21 Sunburn to the inside of the ears. Brush mix a small amount of the flesh mixture with SC-21 Sunburn to paint the fingernails. Clean out eye area of excess flesh color. Lightly outline eyes with SC-34 Down To Earth, basecoat with SC-16 Cotton Tail, irises are SC-36 Irish Luck and pupils are SC-15 Tuxedo.
  3. Antique rocks with SC-35 Gray Hare, grass with SC-36 Irish Luck, hair and bottom of staff with SC-34 Down To Earth. When wiping back excess color, lightly tap back some residue color before rinsing sponge.
  4. Use 2 coat of SC-24 Down to Earth for the vines on the ground. Avoiding the nose and mane, apply 3 coats of SC-5 Tiger Tail to the goat’s head and band of the staff. When dry, apply a heavy wash of SC-21 Sunburn to the horns fading out as the color comes to the forehead. Use SC-15 Tuxedo for the eyes.
  5. Apply coats of SC-21 Sunburn to the hair then dry brush 2 more coats. Apply 1 coat of S-2101 Natural clear to the flesh areas, hair and head on staff except for the nose and mane areas.
  6. For the dress, apply 3 coats of PC-501 Terra Cotta. The boots and center part of mane are 3 coats of PC-503 Khaki. Use PC-502 Speckled Buff for the nose and remaining part of the mane on the goat head.
  7. Apply 3 coats of CC-107 Green Tea to the grass area, CC-104 Plum Blossom to the rocks and CC-106 to the bottom of the staff. For the trim of the dress, use 3 coats of SC-16 Cotton Tail
  8. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 06. With a brush reserved for OV-1 Bright Gold, trim the staff collar. Stilt and fire to shelf cone 018. Remove from kiln with paper towel. Apply thinned black acrylic to the grass, rocks and bottom of the staff and wipe back to reveal crackle pattern.
